Freediving in Fiji

freediving in fiji

Learn what your body and mind are capable of and discover greater comfort, joy and time underwater.

Namotu is better known for its activities on the ocean’s surface—think surfing, kiting, fishing, and foiling. However, there’s a magical world beneath. Off the Island, we have shallow-water coral gardens filled with colourful fish, giant clams, turtles, and eels. Dive deeper, and bigger fish, whales, and all manner of mysterious creatures lurking on steep drop-offs and at the bottom of deep channels. And the water in Fiji is as warm as the hospitality.

When it comes to exploring these depths, there’s no better guide than Kyron Rathbone. Kyron hails from the chilly waters of the Bass Strait and Southern Ocean of Tasmania and is an all-round waterman. Best known for his surfing and paddleboarding, he has more recently delved into freediving. Driven initially by an interest in managing lengthy hold-downs at Shipsterns Bluff, he is now a certified freedive instructor helping others conquer fears and experience the wonders of the world below.

From the moment you meet Kyron, his enthusiasm is palpable and his experience on Namotu spans over a decade. He takes the time to understand your goals, whether you’re comfortable in the water, a first-time diver, or someone looking to overcome mental barriers. The underwater world around Namotu Island is a vibrant tapestry of marine life, with stunning coral reefs and abundant sea creatures. With Kyron’s instruction, you’ll learn to easily navigate these waters, honing your skills in breath control, buoyancy, and relaxation. Start your freedive journey on land before progressing to the pool and then the ocean. His techniques improve your diving and deepen your connection to the ocean, allowing you to experience the underwater realm in a new light.

Freediving with Kyron is about more than just technique; it’s about embracing the calm and beauty of the underwater world. His teachings emphasise the importance of mental clarity and relaxation, helping you to dive deeper and stay underwater longer. These skills can be applied not just to your other water sports but to your mindset on land, too. Freediving fits perfectly into the schedule on Unlimited Weeks, offering an alternative option on flat or calm days and giving balance to your other high-intensity water sports.

Freedive sessions are included for all Unlimited Week guests but is also an option for guests on standard weeks to add to their booking.
